Picking up where his highly acclaimed 'Safe as Milk Replica' left off, San Francisco producer Al Lover presents his latest work 'Distorted Reverberations (of Reverberating Distortion)'. Continuing his journey into the depths of fuzzed out boom bap chaos, 'Distorted' is a collection of some of today's best garage and psych rock tunes sampled and chopped up into tweaked-out, neck snapping instrumental hip-hop slabs.

From the crunchy deconstruction of Ty Segall's version of "Fist Heart Mighty Dawn Dart", driven by spastic breaks, piercing tambourine and haunting guitar howls, to the phased out twangy tones and grimy claps of Davila 666's "Yo Seria Otro", that resembles what a peyote trip into the future might sound like, 'Distorted' sifts through to the rhythm and blues roots of current psychedelic rock and mutilates it over classic breaks in a "wall of sound" fashion not unlike classic Bomb Squad or Dust Brothers production, only drenched in liquid acid.

Inspired by the revitalized garage, and psych scene in SF, Al Lover takes his own approach to the effects used by local bands and applies them to his MPC with the aid of various guitar pedals and recording techniques. The layering of different tones and effects used on the samples produces a beefy, aggressive, original sound not heard in instrumental hip-hop today. The Idea being to experiment with new ideas while directly siting influences and source material as a way of sharing the music sampled with those who have yet to hear it, thus hopefully helping to further connect the underground music community.

So here it is, one last final free download of the year. This one might be my favorite, fuzzed out psychedelic boom-bap shit. Big ugly drunken drums, over spaced out, chopped samples run through pedals and totally reconfigured into distorted madness. No Pro-Tools plug-in magic here, just straight MPC work. The grimy shit, beautiful ugly music. Pretty weird, the only way to make a Beefheart tribute, I guess. It's been a tough week trying to get this finished, but I'm glad to have it all done. This one's for you Beefheart, hope you like it.

This is the first track from the upcoming album "Safe as Milk Replica" that I'm making in honor of the late, great Captain Beefheart. The man was a true innovator, and he deserves to be honored for his important contributions to music. This is my way of doing that, by cutting it up and gluing it back together all fucked up and weird. What can I say, it's all I know. For the next week I will be reworking his album "Safe As Milk" and will release the full results on Monday Dec. 27th for free download. In no way do I intend to try to outshine the works on this record, it might be one of the most perfect Rock albums ever made, I just wish to tip the old hat to the guy for a job well done. "Good show sir, you made some of the best music ever produced on this earth. Your efforts were not in vain." This is in my opinion is a way to help preserve the great works of the past, and help share them with more people. If this effort makes at least one person who hasn't heard of Beefheart go back and explore his works, than I have done my job. I remember as a kid my dad always talking this guy up(Pops was, and is still a big Zappa Fan). It wasn't till I was in my late teens when I picked up one of his albums, "Trout Mask Replica", and I was Like "What the Fuck was this cat up to? He's fuckin' insane!" Truly original music. Some of the best shit ever. "Safe as Milk" is an incredible album, and I advise everyone who likes any sort of music to pick up a copy and bump that shit loud as fuck.

This is basically a rhythmic rebuttal to Jeremy Earl from Woodsist, and the labels PR dude. They both sent me emails telling me to take down any and all downloadable links to the Woodsist Remix project I made a few months ago. Well, fuck that. I respect those cats, but I'm not gonna stop my progression because someones concerned with intellectual property rights or whatever. I don't know, maybe they just think the shit's wack. Sue me, I ain't got shit. Anyhow, this project is a little different then the last couple sludgy, blown-out, tape hiss heavy beat reels I've made. I turned the quantization on for this one, and drank much Coffee while in the lab, as opposed to mass beer consumption for the last two. I find the cadence of the tracks to be more snappy and alert, for the most part. It was an experimental approach for me, I basically had no songs in mind to sample and just reached randomly into the crates and tried to make due with whatever I pulled out. A lot of the beats have no added drums, which is a strange approach for me. There is a lose narrative to the project about sampling laws, and intellectual property rights, just somethin' thats been on my mind a little. Yeah, I hope you enjoy it. Download it for free HERE

I threw this together myself today thanks to piracy, and technology spliced up footage from a Russ Meyers flick, early 60's R&B sample, and conga drums. I think the narrative to the video goes as follows - Old girl is playing music and video games, and is getting tired of the video games, since video games are lame. Anyhow, she hears the music calling out to her, and she starts getting turned on. Being the stand up broad she is, she decides to return the favor to the music by seducing the record player. I found this little gem a couple weeks ago, and was super pumped when I put the needle to it. The cover alone is worth the purchase, That ill font?!? So sick. Anyhow, it was released on Folkways Records in 1976, and is so awesome. Really mellow, with the most beautiful harmonies, and great guitar pickin'. This is a good LP to put on for heavy lamping sessions. I love this record, and pretty much anything Folkways Records has put out that I've heard. They knew what the fuck was up. Every song on here is great. They all sound very similar, but it's to be expected with such a record, and doesn't bother me one bit. The track I chose to play is called "Kyathi Kya Mboya Ki Muyo" which translates to "Sweet Hour of Prayer". Enjoy.

This is a project I threw together over the last few weeks. Woodsist is a great label out of Brooklyn, NY that is really doing some interesting stuff right now. Everything they put out is worth a listen, if not really good. I feel like this is the kind of stuff Hip-Hop producers will be looking to sample 20 years from now. Anyhow, I like the music and decided to remix some of the best tracks from a few of the releases on the label. Super low-fi, off-kilter, distortion heavy, weirdo shit. This is definitely an experimental approach to beat making for me.

Album of the Week- The Standells "Dirty Water"

I paid a good amount for this one, and it was worth every penny. These guys are great, some of the best garage shit out there. This is their first record released on Tower Records in 1966. I've had a few of their 45s for a while now, but this is the first time I've come across this LP. So fucking good. I remember loving the Minor Threat version of "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White" back in the day before I knew the origin of the song. Every track on the album is golden, but I chose that one to play for sentimental reasons. If you ever see this record, cop it.

Andy and Gus circa 2006 I think?

I just wanna take a minute to remember a really great person. Andy Marshall was one of the most positive, creative, interesting people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. He passed away in the loving arms of his family last night, after about a year of battling brain cancer. Andy and I met years ago working at a pizza joint and had been friends ever since, not to say we were super tight, but we always had a great time whenever we got a chance to hang out. Andy was super into music, and really supportive of the Fist Fam, he came to most of our shows whenever we played in town. Obviously he had great taste, I remember him putting me up on The Sonics way before I heard anyone talking Garage Rock revival. He knew how to have a hell of a good time too, always with a smile on his face. I never heard the dude say a negative thing about anyone, ever. He also had the most amazing imagination and random train of thought, endlessly using words I'd never even heard of, describing his insanely brilliant ideas. I really wish I had gotten a chance to see him before he passed. The good ones go first for sure, and Andy was a rare breed. My heart goes out to all his family and loved ones, this is some hard shit to have to go through. I made a little song in his honor today. I wanted to make something that sounded as happy and full of life as I remember him, but it came out a little dark... I don't know, I guess that was the vibe I was feelin' today. Anyhow, this one's for you Andy, I made it extra weird, just the way I thought you would like it. We'll miss you down here, bro.

All the the tracks on this record are pretty much bomb. The selected song isn't the strongest one on the Lp, but it's damn fine in my opinion. I like the drumming change up half way through. I just Picked this Comp up yesterday from Green Apple Books and Records. I Recognized some groups that I liked on it, like Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, and The Fresh and Onlys. Needless to say I was eager to hear the other cats on the record that I was unfamiliar with. It's a pretty darn good record. It seems like the popular sound out here right now could be described as a post-punk hippie kinda vibe recorded deep within a well, and I like it. Local label Secret Seven put it out, and as much as it sounds like throw away tracks from the groups I'm more acquainted with, all the artists on the comp have a unique style and the record flows well. The range is from psych folk to lo-fi garage punk yet it remains pretty cohesive throughout, good shit. Go pick it up and support the local scene. This is a new weekly installment I figured would be kinda cool. I buy too many records not to at least share a little of it with people. Anyhow, This is the first one. Mothers of Invention "Cruisin' with Ruben and the Jets". This was the Mothers' 4th record, and was released in 1969 on the Verve/Bizarre label. The record is a throwback/parody of 50's Doo Woop. I remember my Pops talkin' about this album every time Zappa's name was mentioned. It's fuckin' awesome. Some of the songs are pretty goofy, as are most Zappa tracks, but there's some seriously good psychedelic Doo Woop on this record. Here's my favorite cut from the record "Any Way the Wind Blows".

With this project I really wanted to do something dirty, and sloppy (That's what she said). Anyhow, I wanted it to sound as raw as possible. All the sequencing is done live, and I think it gives it a kind of an organic feel. It makes me think of a band practicing, and tightening up as they go. It's an ugly thing, and thats my favorite part about it. I toyed around with some new styles of drum programing. I did less sampling, and all the beats are really minimal. I haven't done this blogging thing in a bit, but I've been busy being depressed, and trying to be as productive as possible, considering the circumstances. My girlfriend of 3 years and I broke up (do to my own stupidity) about 4 months ago, and I feel like I'm just starting to come to terms with it. It's been a really hard process of acceptance and letting go, two things I'm not very good at. Anyhow, to help get through this rough patch of life, along with massive amounts of booze, I made a few instrumental pieces that to me, kind of convey how I was, and still am feeling. I placed them all together with a few relevant vocal samples into a single track to make one continual mix. I think it works better this way as opposed to a bunch of random songs standing alone by themselves. I'm really happy about how the project turned out. I sampled all the records from an old portable turntable so it has a consistent low-fi sound throughout the entire project. It's not mastered or mixed very well by any means, but I like over all feel of it. It's also a pre-curser to a really cool idea I have for this upcoming year. After the after party My good pal Jeremy Hardcastle invited Micah, Philo, Annie, and I over to his crib for home made hot dogs. Holy shit! Dude made the best dawg I've ever had in my life. He only uses prime cuts of local beef and pork, and cases them all himself. Pretty much all the side ingredients he's using are homemade, too. I'm trying to tell ya'll, bacon wrapped hot dogs with homemade chilli, beer cheese, mustard, and jalapenos at 3 in the a.m. Hot damn! This guy is a seriously talented chef, I used to work with him at Table and I remember when he first started making these things, and hadn't perfected the recipe. Alright folks, this is some serious shit. You have to watch this documentary, it is the realest thing I've seen in a long time. It's a history of the infamous Bloods and Crips gang culture in Los Angeles, and is directed by Stacy Peralta who also did the "Dogtown Z-Boys" and "Riding Giants" films. Speaking of dope rappers I just found out about this. Apparently Sean price, Guilty Simpson, and Black Milk have got an album coming out under the moniker Random Axe. I guess this is old news but whatever, it should be tight. Black milk has got some fire beats, he's pretty fresh with the lyrics too. I remember playing a show with him in Chapel Hill, N.C. right after his first album dropped and being really impressed. All in all I think this will be a solid project and I will definitely be scooping it when it hits the shelves, whenever that is.

The new books that I got have really got me pumped on sketching again. This is a drawing I did from one of Albrecht Durer's paintings "Virgin with the Pear". This dude is so dope. When I first got the book I wasn't really up on who he was, but as I looked at more of his work I recognized a lot of it. Basically he was a German that lived during the 1500s was super influential and is regarded as the greatest artist of the Renaissance in northern Europe. Lots of crazy religious imagery and Dark Age nonsense. Good shit

So, last night I got off work and headed over to the Philo's crib to get some flicks of Ironfist workin' on a new song. It's been a hot minute since they have, so I wanted to document it. We chilled for a bit, and instead listened to old Fist Family songs. Philo was bumpin' shit I had even forgotten recording, super cutty tracks. After that we headed to some hipster party to link up with Dorian, but that shit was just goofy and filled with youngsters. I saw at least seven girls with that stupid shave half of your head haircut and was pretty over it. The house was super tight though and they had it set up like a gallery of sorts with art hanging all around. Pretty cool. After the party Philo and I met up with Linus and headed back to the lab for some late night midi sessions. I shouldn't drink and try to program drums though, bad combo, but it was still fun.

So, saturday was the Wallenburg contest, and I had to check it out. I believe this was the last one, I heard rumor of the stairs being torn down, bummer. I was totally gonna Nollie Backside Heelflip 'em ,too. Anyhow, if you haven't seen this beast of a set in person it's pretty ridiculous how big they are. I was amazed at how much pain these fools were putting themselves through. They were just huckin' themselves down 'em, and you can't just roll a slam like that off very easily. I didn't get to see much of the tricks due to the fact that there were tons of people lurking about, but it was cool to be there none the less. I got a couple booty flicks but it just doesn't do it justice. Be sure and peep the video edit I got off Youtube at the bottom of the post, it's insane to watch what went down on that bitch!

Topr's Going Away Party

Last night was Topr's going away party at 111 Minna.... what a night. Once again, I shouldn't open a tab at the bar, for I tend to spend, hence angering Nina when I come home drunk at three a.m. with beer and pizza breath. The show was great, all the acts killed it, and the vibe was good, I even saw a cat fight break out in the middle of the floor (crazy bitches). It was good to rap with the Fam again, and we got a great response from the crowd. The live painting provided by Sorrow and Sam Flores was real tight and the art hanging was pretty cool as well. Last Saturday I got a chance to see on of my all time favorite emcees, Bun-B, and I was not disappointed. We (Micah, Alex, me, and Keith) got in to the show free thanks to Ben at The Hundreds LA. Bun actually came into the store and got a grip of clothes earlier that day, one outfit of which he rocked at the show. Apparently he loves the brand and stops by the shop whenever he's in town. Needless to say he killed it, and surprisingly so did Mike Jones. Now, I'm not the biggest Mike Jones fan, but dude ripped it, even if he does look like a skinny Tracy Morgan. I had a great time and got way too drunk, thanks to the credit card minimum at the bar. The video does not do the show justice, for it sounds like shit and cuts out early because I forgot to recharge the batteries, what ever, at least I got a few flicks.

This spot is a real dope bookstore right up the street from my house. It's going out of business, bummer. They had an art show and party for the closing of the store thursday evening, so I went to check it out and try to do some last minute Gurp Out promotion. It was a cool scene, good art, good people, a broad doing ballet to old Desmond Dekker songs, real tight. It's a shame to see this place go, but I guess the name says it all. Irony.

I heard that Magnolia Electric Co. was playing the Fillmore with the Avett Brothers and I really wanted to check it out. The homies Austin, and Johnny hooked me up with the free ticket since they work at the venue, so that was a added bonus (thanks fellas). I got in late and missed Magnolia, but the Avett Brothers killed it, I can't wait to go back to the south. I met up with my man Joya, and his lady Tiffany and watched the show from the middle of the room, hence the blurry flicks. While standing in the crowd I had some broads from Virginia come on to me. One of them started leaning back onto me trying to get some grindage action, I guess. I had to roll out though because I didn't want to give them the wrong idea, Good to know I still got it though. I had a great time, and even got away with some footage of the show, even though I got rep remanded by security. Lets see if I get busted for piracy on You Tube. Good show for sure. I was listening to the radio today and there was a program on nerds. A segment of the broadcast was dedicated to "Nerdcore rap". They interviewed the cat that was making this documentary, and it was pretty interesting. I don't know, I try to appreciate all types of music, but I can't really get down with this. That being said, I think it's cool when people try to express themselves, but the music these fools are making is, in my opinion whack. But there's always room for improvement. Keep it up nerds!

Space Gallery show

Thursday night was a blast! We had a great show, I wanna give a thanks to all the folks that came through. Everyone murdered it, I forgot to get Nina to take pictures of me while I rapped. Oh well, another day perhaps. The night stared off a little rocky due to the fact that the turntables where hooked up incorrectly, but Philo being the natural born sound man that he is fixed that up right quick. So I opened the show, and had a great response. It's been quite some time since I've rapped. I wasn't sure about how it would go, but I killed it, naturally. Linus of the Axerats (minus Richard Blick) was next, He straight smashed that shit. It was his best performance that I've seen to date and I was super stoked. Ed Shrader followed with a really awesome and funny set consisting of just him drumming, singing and screaming. It reminded me of The Stooges minus Guitar and bass, really great. Next, Height with Friends wrecked shop, this dude is one of my favorite emcees out and goes hard every show I've seen, they had a great stage performance, and dynamic. Real fun. Crazy Mob finished off the night with some southern fried, mobbed out, drunken, rap extravaganza. They killed it in true Fist Family fashion. Hype set, I'm really feeling what these cats are doing with this project. Way to hustle, fellows. Anyhow, check the photos and the video to catch a snippet of pure rap thunder!

For the last couple nights I have been staying up digging through my records looking for songs to play at the show tomorrow night. When I lived in Asheville I used to spend days out in the country looking for music at thrift stores, yard sales, flea markets, antique stores, where ever. I really miss that, and it's not the same here. The record shops have good albums and everything but it's different. It's the whole experience of digging, not knowing what you'll find. Driving an hour outside of town into the middle of nowhere to a one room shack filled with worthless shit, and a mountain of sleeveless 45s. It's a special thing when you find a little nugget of audible gold.
