Album of the Week- The Standells "Dirty Water"

I paid a good amount for this one, and it was worth every penny. These guys are great, some of the best garage shit out there. This is their first record released on Tower Records in 1966. I've had a few of their 45s for a while now, but this is the first time I've come across this LP. So fucking good. I remember loving the Minor Threat version of "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White" back in the day before I knew the origin of the song. Every track on the album is golden, but I chose that one to play for sentimental reasons. If you ever see this record, cop it.

Wavves "Vermin" Al Lover Remix

Dusthead Mixtape Vol. 6, Contemporary Freak Out Free Download

I wanted to switch things up a bit, so this is a mix of all current bands. There is so much good Rock 'n Roll out right now it's retarded, especially in the Bay. Most of the stuff on this mix is Bay shit, also a couple Asheville, N.C. groups. It makes me happy that people are out there making un-slick, throw-back Rock, so I gotta give 'em some props. This shit is just great, feel good music. Download it for free HERE.

Track Listing

1. Thee Oh Sees - "I Was Denied"
2. Brilliant Colors - " Never Mine"
3. Reigning Sound - " Call Me"
4. Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin - "I Wear Black"
5. Spencer Dude & The Doodles - "Flirting"
6. Ty Segall - "Ceasar"
7. The Sandwitches - "Back To The Sea"
8. Mad Tea Party - "& What's The Matter?"
9. The Fresh & Onlys - "Second One To Know"

Micah Aza "Micah and the World" Free Download

Yo, check the technique. Micah Aza's got a new album out that's super tight. A low-fi, psychedelic beat reel guaranteed to have your head noddin'. This dude's been at it for a while, and has been a big influence for me as far as producers go. Dude's the illest. Peep the free download HERE.

Album of the Week- Woods "At Echo Lake"

These cats are killin' the game right now. Lo-fi psych-folk at it's finest. I'm glad people are making music like this right now, I don't care how trendy it is, Its a complete counter to the super polished bullshit being passed off as popular music. All the the tracks on this record are pretty much bomb. The selected song isn't the strongest one on the Lp, but it's damn fine in my opinion. I like the drumming change up half way through. Tip of the hat gentlemen. Go buy this on vinyl now.

Album of the Week- In a Cloud "New Sounds Of San Francisco" Compilation

I just Picked this Comp up yesterday from Green Apple Books and Records. I Recognized some groups that I liked on it, like Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, and The Fresh and Onlys. Needless to say I was eager to hear the other cats on the record that I was unfamiliar with. It's a pretty darn good record. It seems like the popular sound out here right now could be described as a post-punk hippie kinda vibe recorded deep within a well, and I like it. Local label Secret Seven put it out, and as much as it sounds like throw away tracks from the groups I'm more acquainted with, all the artists on the comp have a unique style and the record flows well. The range is from psych folk to lo-fi garage punk yet it remains pretty cohesive throughout, good shit. Go pick it up and support the local scene. Here's a cut off the album, Thee Oh Sees "Contraption".

Album of the Week- Mothers of Invention "Cruisin' with Ruben and the Jets"

This is a new weekly installment I figured would be kinda cool. I buy too many records not to at least share a little of it with people. Anyhow, This is the first one. Mothers of Invention "Cruisin' with Ruben and the Jets". This was the Mothers' 4th record, and was released in 1969 on the Verve/Bizarre label. The record is a throwback/parody of 50's Doo Woop. I remember my Pops talkin' about this album every time Zappa's name was mentioned. It's fuckin' awesome. Some of the songs are pretty goofy, as are most Zappa tracks, but there's some seriously good psychedelic Doo Woop on this record. Here's my favorite cut from the record "Any Way the Wind Blows".

Dusthead Mixtape Vol. 4, Fuckin' Country! Free Download

I love Country Music, I don't care. It's Amazing. You know, even some modern stuff is pretty entertaining. It's full of witty songwriting, no matter how much the record companies have drained the music of soul. That being said, the old stuff is where it's at. This is a little mix of some good old... old country. It's kind of all over the place in terms of regional sound, but still all the songs are really good. There's even one tune reppin' Spruce Pine NC! Oh yeah, I took it upon myself to draw the cover too. I hope you like it. Download it for free HERE.

Relective Flesh

So, I got a new project I'm finishing up right now. It'll be out in April. Basically I'm making a 12 page zine of collaged images as packaging for my new CD. I'm really into the Idea of taking something old and reshaping it into something new. This project will embody that Idea pretty well, I think. Im'a press up a hundred or so copies and see what happens. Hopefully I can sell 'em all so I can make another one. Here's a little sneak preview.

Color Chasm

So the homie Linus has got a new band Color Chasm, and they're really good. You May know of Linus for his cold retarded rapping abilities with the Fist Fam and Axerats. Anyhow, they played their first show the other night at our house, and they killed shit! Everyone in attendance agreed. I recorded one of their songs on my camera and the sound quality is okay, but it'll give you an idea of their sound. Enjoy.

Dusthead Mixtape Vol. 1

Chaos Theory E.P. Free Download

With this project I really wanted to do something dirty, and sloppy (That's what she said). Anyhow, I wanted it to sound as raw as possible. All the sequencing is done live, and I think it gives it a kind of an organic feel. It makes me think of a band practicing, and tightening up as they go. It's an ugly thing, and thats my favorite part about it. I toyed around with some new styles of drum programing. I did less sampling, and all the beats are really minimal. Plus, you can never get enough tambourine. I hope you like it. Download it for free HERE.

30 Minute Acid Tab Mixtape Free download

I was bored today and decided to throw a little mix together of some old hippie shit. I mostly wanted to play straight forward 60's rock with trippy face melter guitar solos, but I strayed from that format a little. These are all great songs. The mix is one track, about 30 minutes long. Hopefully I'll put a few of these up a month, trying to stick with a certain genre for each one. We'll see, It's fun to lock myself in my room and just play records all day and not think about reality. Download the mix for free HERE.

Al Lover All Over Free Download

I haven't done this blogging thing in a bit, but I've been busy being depressed, and trying to be as productive as possible, considering the circumstances. My girlfriend of 3 years and I broke up (do to my own stupidity) about 4 months ago, and I feel like I'm just starting to come to terms with it. It's been a really hard process of acceptance and letting go, two things I'm not very good at. Anyhow, to help get through this rough patch of life, along with massive amounts of booze, I made a few instrumental pieces that to me, kind of convey how I was, and still am feeling. I placed them all together with a few relevant vocal samples into a single track to make one continual mix. I think it works better this way as opposed to a bunch of random songs standing alone by themselves. I'm really happy about how the project turned out. I sampled all the records from an old portable turntable so it has a consistent low-fi sound throughout the entire project. It's not mastered or mixed very well by any means, but I like over all feel of it. It's also a pre-curser to a really cool idea I have for this upcoming year. Feel free to burn it for as many people as you like. This project means more to me than any other piece of music I've made to date, and I hope you like it. You can download it free HERE.
